2023: Obasanjo ‘fully backing’ Peter Obi’s campaign – Osuntokun

Akin Osuntokun, the Labour Party’s newly appointed Director General (DG) of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), disclosed on Wednesday that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is “fully” backing the LP presidential candidate Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign.

Osuntokun made the aforementioned statement while responding to a question about Obasanjo’s role in the Obi/Datti during an interview session on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Osuntokun described the former president’s close relationship with him and Okupe as “a father figure.” The relationship is better described in that way. We consider him a father figure, not an “ally.” Is it true that I am not qualified for the position, assuming you are correct? Am I not up to the task?”

Osuntokun replied, “You’ll have to ask the presidential candidate, my principal, whether it was an Obasanjo slot and that was how the position was filled,” when asked if his appointment was based on the recommendation of the former president.

Don’t forget that I served as the immediate zonal coordinator of the South-West campaign, so this is essentially an elevation. It is not that I am merely joining the campaign organization; rather, you are free to assert that Obasanjo holds the position. Different people have different perceptions of it.

The DG of the campaign argued that rather than who is behind his appointment, what he brings to the table should be the focus.

“Forget about whether or not I am taking someone else’s place or who recommended me. That is unimportant. The most important thing is how well I can do the job. Why should I have any objections to Obasanjo’s recommendation of a highly qualified candidate to lead the party to victory? He stated, “It’s not an issue for me.”
