Afaraukwu Kingdom suspends new yam festival over Nnamdi Kanu’s detention

Afaraukwu Kingdom in Umuahia North Local council of Abia State, Nnamdi Kanu’s hometown, has announced the suspension of its 2021 new yam festival, saying that it cannot be celebrating while its son languishes in detention.

Afaraukwu Development Union (ADU) stated, yesterday, that the people suspended the festival to express their concern over the plight of their detained prince.

“We seek that our son be given fair hearing in a court of competent jurisdiction, based on national and international laws,” ADU stated.

The release, jointly signed by chiefs and traditional rulers of the kingdom, called on the Abia state government and Security Agencies to help maintain peace and order in their community.

“Afaraukwu is a peaceful and law-abiding community and shall not involve in any activity that will cause breach of the law and order nor associate with any unlawful organisation,” the statement added.
