Adidas Opens Its First West African Flagship In Lagos

Adidas opens its first West African flagship in Lagos

Nigerian vernacular architecture meets Adidas’s long design history at the brand’s new Lagos flagship, designed by Oshinowo Studio.

Located in the city’s Victoria Island, the store is wrapped in the kinds of aluminium sheets often used in Makoko – a floating settlement on the coast of Lagos. A mix of solid and perforated, these panels are lit by strips of neon lights.

The facade brings new life to the existing concrete building that lies beneath, with Oshinowo Studio focusing on retrofitting rather than starting anew. According to the practice, it reflects Lago’s rich culture of ‘upcycling, reuse and regeneration’.

In addition to its new look, the studio extended the building and installed a solar power system and wastewater treatment plant. Rounding out the retail space is a basketball half-court painted by Nigerian artist Osa Okunkpolor.

‘Our design is inspired by the city’s resilient, adaptable, and go-getter resolve, building a place of convergence for sports and culture,’ says founder Tosin Oshinowo.
