BREAKING: Abia PDP guber candidate, Ikonne dead

Prof. Uchenna Ikonne, a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State’s governorship race on March 11, has passed away.

He passed away on Wednesday at the National Hospital in Abuja, according to the Daily Post.

He had previously been treated at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

In a statement he issued on behalf of the family, Chikezie, Ikonne’s son, confirmed his father’s passing.

“I regret to announce the death of my dear father, Prof. Eleazar Uchenna Ikonne, who died at the National Hospital Abuja today, 25th January 2023 by 4 a.m. after a brief illness,” the statement read.

After receiving appropriate treatment in the United Kingdom, he was on the road to recovery when he relapsed a few days ago, resulting in multiple cardiac arrests from which he never recovered.

“Further details and arrangements would be made public after family discussions and meetings,” the statement reads.

Ikonne’s illness was confirmed by Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu just last week.

However, the Governor had stated that Ikonne was “recovering slowly and progressively.”

I would like to make a progress report, and the progress is that Ikonne is gradually recovering.

The Governor stated at the time, “He will be strong enough in the future to join.”
