Delta govt urges residents to accept old Naira notes

Tuesday, the Delta Government urged state residents to follow the CBN’s directive that the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes remain legal tender until December 31, 2023.

In light of the Supreme Court’s March 3 ruling and the Central Bank’s circular directing the continued recognition of the old bills as legal tender, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, made the call in a statement in Asaba. In that statement, he urged all residents in the state to continue to accept the bills as legal tender.

He specifically urged government revenue collectors, traders, markets, fuel stations, and other stakeholders to ensure that the CBN’s directive was followed.

Aniagwu stated that the state government was aware of the difficulties brought on by the naira swap policy, but he urged people to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Supreme Court’s decision to alleviate the tension and hardships brought on by the policy.

As a result, he added that the public should not reject payments made in the old currency by any Delta State Government agencies or stakeholders.
