Gunmen kill military personnel at checkpoint in Rivers community

There is palpable tension in Obelle community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of a military personnel who hailed from the same community.

The officer, who was said to have returned for holidays, was shot dead in front of his residence where some boys allegedly mounted a checkpoint against illegal oil bunkering activities.

Some soldiers on hearing that one of their colleagues had been shot dead, invaded the community, arrested some persons and proceeded to burn down the camp of the local vigilante group.

The soldiers who came in different trucks, also destroyed the checkpoints along Ibaa-Obelle Elele town road which were allegedly mounted by some police personnel and indigenes of the named communities.

Meanwhile, some inhabitants of the community have fled area in fear.

The 6 division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt was yet to issue an official statement on the latest killing.

The latest incident comes two weeks after gunmen suspected to members of a cult gang terrorizing the area killed the second in command the local vigilante group in the area.
