Nigerian soldiers raid Anambra community, kill civilians, burn homes

Horrific military attacks have left scores of houses set on fire and civilians dead in Orsumoghu, a community in the Ihiala local government area in Anambra state.

The attack on the border communities between Imo and Anambra state, which began last weekend, forced residents to flee to the bushes and other communities.

Soldiers accuse the community of harboring members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a non-state vigilante group combating violent Fulani herders in the southeast and south-south.

Nnenna Okoro, a resident who fled the military raid, told OAK METRO that soldiers also shot and took away many young people from the community.

“The soldiers burned down many houses and properties in my community, they are killing people, we managed to escape,” she said.

“When I returned to the village this morning, I found that they have burnt my house and other houses in the village. They came back again this morning,” said another resident.

Meanwhile, a military source from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, who confirmed the report, said the soldiers were carrying out an operation to flush out those he described as “terrorists”, but declined to comment on the destruction of property and attacks on civilians.

The incident is the latest in an ongoing military raid on communities in southeast Nigeria.
