Obi Versus Tinubu: Resolve Petitions Before May 29 – Afenifere Urges Council

Afenifere, a sociocultural pan-Yoruba group, has insisted that it will continue to support what it calls “the victory of Peter Obi” of the Labour Party in the presidential election on February 25 and everything he does to bring it about.

Afenifere stated once more that the election of a president from the South East would ensure that Nigerians would live in peace, fairness, and equity.

The group urged the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to expedite the resolution of all pending petitions at its April general meeting in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State.

Obi and the Labour Party are suing to contest Bola Tinubu’s victory in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential election.

Afenifere, on the other hand, strongly urged the judiciary to ensure that all presidential election-related petitions are “timeously and justly resolved before the end of the tenure of the Buhari administration” in a communique that was signed after the meeting by the leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and the group Secretary General, Sola Ebiseni (retd).

Afenifere said that this is the only way that Nigerians can gain confidence in its intervention.

The group recalled that countries in Africa with lower resources have set similar precedents in this regard.

In the dispatch, Afenifere additionally asked the National Government not to be inefficient by committing about N100 billion to the approaching populace registration.

According to Afenifere, there is no compelling reason why “the expiring” President Muhammadu Buhari administration should conduct the census.

As a result, the group demanded that “all steps and preparations in that regard [should] be stopped immediately.”
