BREAKING! GTI changes its report that linked IPOB to terrorism and makes a U-turn.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have been dropped from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI)’s 2022 list of the 10 deadliest terrorist organizations.

According to the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP)’s annual GTI report, IPOB was to blame for 40 attacks and 57 deaths in 2022. In addition, the report claimed that the listed figures are higher than the previous year’s 26 attacks and 34 deaths. We were unable to comprehend why this publication was produced.

According to the report, “The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which the Nigerian government designated as a terrorist group in 2017, recorded their deadliest year in 2022.” In 2022, they were the cause of 40 attacks and 57 deaths, up from 26 attacks and 34 deaths the previous year. There are many factions within the IPOB, many of which are working toward a peaceful Nigerian takeover.

It went on to erroneously assert that IPOB has numerous factions, which IPOB denies. They claimed that there is only one IPOB movement worldwide that is registered, and they have long advocated for a Referendum supervised by the United Nations to allow the people of Old Eastern Nigeria (Biafra) to decide their fate in Nigeria.

IEP, on the other hand, faced a lot of criticism following the report from IPOB’s media warriors and legal department, who demanded that IEP prove those false accusations in front of an international court.

We awoke on March 27, 2023, following the backlash, to a new and retracting publication from IEP stating that it had “updated the Global Terrorism Index 2023 to reflect this necessary clarification” regarding IPOB’s lack of a ranking as the 10th most deadly terrorist organization worldwide.

“The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a pro-Biafra secessionist movement based in Southeast Nigeria with the goal of establishing an independent state of Biafra,” the publication states.

In 2017, the Nigerian government declared IPOB to be a terrorist organization. IPOB’s paramilitary wing, the Eastern Security Network (IPOB-ESN), has been implicated in a number of attacks in recent years. None of these attacks have been attributed to the group.

Therefore, it is essential to distinguish between the group’s alleged involvement in violent activity and its peaceful activities. The Global Terrorism Index 2023 has been updated today to reflect this necessary clarification.

The following is their most recent update in full;

“Based in Southeast Nigeria, the Indigenous People Of Biafra is a pro-Biafra secessionist movement. Its objective is to establish Biafra as a sovereign nation. In 2017,the Nigerian government prohibited the gathering as a fear based oppressor association.

IPOB’s paramilitary wing, the Eastern Security Network (IPOB-ESN), has been implicated in a number of attacks in recent years. 40 attacks and 57 deaths were attributed to IPOB-ESN in 2022. This is an increase from the previous year, when there were 26 attacks and 34 deaths. The IPOB has not claimed any of the attacks as its own.

Since its inception in 2012, IPOB has focused on peacefully achieving its goal of establishing a sovereign state in the Southeast of Nigeria, despite its prohibition. Numerous IPOB members, backers, and followers continue to peacefully work toward this goal today.”

Family Writers Press International has not received any responses or feedback from IPOB regarding the most recent IEP report as of this writing. On the other hand, a number of IPOB members can be seen on social media expressing some happiness over the publication of GTI at the moment.
