Reverend Father Isaac Achi’s Deanery of the Catholic Church in Kaffinkoro town in the Psikoro local government area of Niger state has been destroyed by armed gangs that are thought to be Islamic terrorists.
Reverend father Collins, his assistant in the church, had also been shot and taken to the hospital.
It was learned that a large group of suspected Islamic terrorists stormed the town early on Sunday, shooting randomly and looting homes there.
Sources say that the terrorist group took over the vicarage, set it on fire, and then shot the assistant of the Reverend father Achi who was trying to get away.
Pastor Raphael Opawoye, secretary of the State Christian Association of Nigeria, confirmed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate and sad.” Opawoye also referred to the incident as “a black Sunday,” noting that CAN officials have rushed to the area to gather additional information.
The CAN coordinator in the Paikoro local government area is referred to as the deceased.
The police did not respond to requests for information regarding the incident at the time this report was submitted.
