Buhari must free Nnamdi Kanu, he got no option at this point — Sowore

Nigerian political activist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari must release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stating he had no options.

Sowore, reacting to Buhari’s summons on the rule of law when Igbo leaders visited the President at State House Abuja on Friday to demand Kanu’s unconditional release, said the president did not believe in the rule of law that he mentioned at the meeting.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday, the political activist said, “Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t understand the doctrine of Separation of Powers, He doesn’t believe in the Rule of Law, but he’s got no option at this point, he must #FreeNnamdiKanuNow! #BuhariMustGo #RevolutionNow”

Buhari had told Igbo leaders that the demand for unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the Executive and Judiciary, but promised to consider it.

“In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the Judiciary.. But the demand you made is heavy. I will consider it,” he told the Igbo leaders led by First Republic parliamentarian and Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi.

Kanu, still held captive Department of State Services (DSS) custody, was seized in Kenya and illegally repatriated to Nigeria.

He faces charges of treason and other unfounded crimes for calling for a referendum on an independent state known as Biafra.
