BVAS reset ends today, INEC promises results transmission

The PUNCH has learned that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines that were used in the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25 will be reconfigured until Monday.

In order to reconfigure the BVAS, the Independent National Electoral Commission had moved the March 11 governorship and state House of Assembly elections to March 18.

As a result, all poll-related activities were rescheduled, including the political parties’ inspection of sensitive materials at the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Following the Court of Appeal’s approval to reconfigure the BVAS machines, INEC held a management meeting on Wednesday to make the decision.

The commission stated that it needed time to reconfigure the BVAS machines that were used in the presidential election on February 25 before it could proceed with the governorship poll as originally scheduled.

The Labour Party had filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal challenging the reconfiguration of the BVAS that was used for the presidential poll, which the LP had rejected. The appeal was denied.

Allowing the Labour Party’s and Peter Obi’s objections would amount to “tying the hands of the respondent (INEC),” according to the panel of the appellate court.

The source also stated that the glitches that delayed the upload of presidential poll results had been fixed, and that the results for the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections would be posted on INEC’s result-viewing portal.

He stated, “The results of the Polling Unit will be transmitted via the IReV portal.” To be sure, the ones for the February 25 political decision have practically undeniably been downloaded after we fixed the hitch that had made it hard to do as such.”

The official stated that sensitive materials would be re-distributed on Wednesday regarding the distribution of materials prior to the governorship election.

“Before we had to move the state elections to March 11, we had completed the distribution of non-sensitive materials. Before the new date, some states had begun moving the sensitive materials. In consultation with all stakeholders, including party officials and the police, we were forced to return them to the Central Bank of Nigeria for safekeeping.

“We will return them to the local governments beginning on Wednesday,” the statement reads.
