Calm tensions, stop electoral violence, UK advises Nigerians

The United Kingdom has urged important stakeholders and political parties to ensure a peaceful election in advance.
Andrew Mitchell, the UK’s Minister of State for Development and Africa, advised Nigerians yesterday in a statement that the UK and its government remained committed to supporting elections that are credible and inclusive, which are essential to Nigeria’s continued democratic growth and the future of regional and global democracy.
However, he urged party officials to adhere to electoral laws and institutions and to refrain from expressing hatred.
The assertion read: ” The United Kingdom places a high value on Nigeria, and as a result, we are closely following the months leading up to the elections for governor, the national assembly, and the presidency.
“I have met four presidential candidates and the Chairman of INEC over the past two months, and we have stressed our support for the process and our dedication to fostering a strong relationship between our two countries.
“The UK Government continues to work closely with INEC and our Nigerian civil society partners to provide advisory support on electoral and legal reforms, contribute to the strengthening of democratic institutions, and advocate for the significance of civil society engagement in electoral and democratic processes in order to assist in the delivery of credible elections.
“The election process must be free, fair, and credible for Nigeria’s stability and consolidation of democracy.” Before, during, and after the elections, I urge all Nigerian actors to actively intervene to quell any tensions and prevent violence.
“I approach party authorities at all levels to regard basic freedoms and electing regulations and organizations and take a firm stand against viciousness and can’t stand discourse. Anything that hinders the peaceful and open conduct of the election process is strongly condemned by me.
