Change begins at LGs, before governorship, presidential polls

It is not just who we elect but also where we elect that will propel us into the future. Having the right people elected at the local level is the first step in demanding more at the local level. Every Nigerian is excited again about the elections in 2023. However, I am appalled as I observe the government’s machinery being turned on its head.

The fact that, regardless of how much we admire our candidates, the actual agent of change will not be who will win the presidency or who has more vision; rather, it will be the demand for the respect of the Nigerian constitution and the return of attention to local governments. If Nigeria wants to change, who is running for chairman is more important than the president or governors.

As we move forward into a new era, I want to do everything in my power to assist my nation in rising from the ashes of its past.

Nigerians must focus on electing credible LG leaders. It begs the question of why the rule of law is being abused in a situation where only those with influence can run the county. You will always be owned by those who fund your campaign, not by those who elect you. This, at least, holds true for our politics in numerous instances.

In accordance with our constitution in Canada, the electorate’s most pressing issues are assigned to the local government level. The chairman of the local government is the person who will be making recommendations to the State if you are worried about that. If you elect a good governor, they will honor the needs of local governments and contribute federal funds only if they are elected.

The true community leader emerges at the local government level—the person who lives in the community and is most familiar with its requirements. They are aware of the opportunities, challenges, and priorities in the region. They are directly accountable for the establishment and upkeep of cemeteries, burial grounds, and homes for the homeless or infirm as well as the collection of fees and taxes.

Bicycles, trucks (other than mechanically propelled trucks), canoes, wheelbarrows, and carts are all included in this category. It also covers the establishment, upkeep, and regulation of markets, motor parks, and other public conveniences, as well as the construction and upkeep of roads, streets, drains, and other public highways, parks, and open spaces.

Registration of births, deaths, and marriages, as well as the assessment of privately owned houses or tenements for the purpose of levying such rates as may be prescribed by the House of Assembly of State, are among the functions performed at the local levels. Other duties include naming roads and streets, numbering houses, providing and maintaining public transportation, and disposing of trash.

The local governments are in charge of outdoor advertising regulation, pet movement and ownership, shops and kiosks, restaurants and other food-selling establishments, and laundry facilities.

Therefore, it makes sense to any reasonable person that the local leader should be given more value and attention than the federal or state politician. Why politicians themselves do not feel the need to emphasize the possibilities at the local level is beyond me. You can see that they aren’t really thinking deeply enough.

In order to allow the grassroots to grow, the government needs to emphasize local government elections in the coming year. to give young people the opportunity to change their communities. Nigeria cannot be built from the top down, but only from the bottom up. Handouts are the only thing you get from a top-down government. Because the machinery of change is not at the state level, those who receive without a pull from the grassroots can only feed themselves and their families. They never get the real ability to influence or make change.

The Nigerian government structure is made up of 774 local government areas. Imagine 774 people heading toward development in nearby areas. Over 200 million people are under the collective control of those 774 heads of local governments, not the president or governors. Do you not prefer that they compete to improve the management and operation of towns, cities, and capitals over those who control the nation’s income? To give people the impression that their governments are doing something, the president and governor ought to be responsible for ensuring that local authorities receive consistent income.
