SAHARANEWS – Court in the United Kingdom has scheduled April 29, 2019 to hear the case between Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra, and the federal government of Nigeria.
Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB had dragged the Nigerian government to court in the United Kingdom, in a matter concerning the right to self-determination of indigenous people in Nigeria.
Nnamdi Kanu was arrested on treason charges in Lagos on October 14, 2015 and was detained in a jail without trial for more than a year and half, despite several court orders that ordered his release. In addition, shortly after the court granted him bail, the Nigerian army raided his home where they killed many people, forcing him to flee to Israel.
In March 2019, a federal high court in Abuja ordered that he be re-arrested for what it described as “failure to appear in court for trial” of treasonable felony which the government allege he committed.
Since 2015, more than 250 IPOB members have been killed by soldiers, and many are still in detention.
