Naira swap: Protests trail Supreme Court order, FG seeks dismissal of ruling

Over the interim order of the Supreme Court halting the deadline for using old naira notes, protesters yesterday besieged the headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

Yesterday, the Supreme Court’s seven-member panel, led by Justice John Okoro, temporarily prevented the Federal Government from limiting the use of the old naira notes after February 10.

The governors of the states of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara submitted the ex-parte application.

In the meantime, the Federal Government has requested that the supreme court dismiss the case for lack of jurisdiction.

Obed Agu, one of the protesters’ leaders from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), told reporters in Abuja that President Muhammadu Buhari ought to issue an executive order keeping February 10 as the deadline for using old naira notes.
Governors begged President Buhari yesterday to extend the deadline for using the old notes, in contrast to the protesters’ request.

The CBN was also advised to extend the deadline by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to difficulties obtaining the new N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

However, the Labour Party stated that it is not yet Uhuru for vote buyers, particularly those who are celebrating the interim order issued by the Supreme Court.
