According reports, the selection came at a meeting President Muhammadu Buhari had with APC Senators-elect at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The moves by President Buhari and the leadership of APC to zone the Senate President and its Deputy to the North have been heavily criticized by well meaning Nigerians and professional groups, Igbere TV can authoritatively report.
Many people have said, “zoning both crucial positions to the North shows that the country is now Northern Republic Of Nigeria”, and urged President Buhari to consider the Igbos.
Also, a pressure group ( Ndi-Igbo Reformed Group), NRG, based in Onitsha has cautioned the political class against heating the polity with selfish ambitions.
According to the group’s spokesman, High Chief Chinedu Agbaeze, it is the turn of Igbo to produce the Senate President for the 9th session of the national assembly.
He stressed that since President Muhammadu Buhari is Hausa and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is Yoruba, for the sake of fairness and equity, a Nigerian of Igbo extraction should be given the opportunity to serve as President of the Senate.
Speaking with a cross-section of journalists, in Onitsha on Tuesday, the seasoned administrator urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be patriotic in their agenda, adding that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable.
He said, “soon after the successful conduct and subsequent announcement of the results of the February 23 presidential and national assembly elections, returning and new senators commenced high-level consultations and lobbying for plum positions in the national assembly.
” We gathered that the ruling party, APC, with majority in the Senate, may have agreed to zone the position of Senate President to the North East and Deputy Senate President to the North West.
“If it so, it is imperative for relevant stakeholders of the party to re-consider their decision in the interest of nation building.
” The South East has been continually alienated from national polity.
“Igbo is a predominant tribe in Nigeria and as such, should be given a good consideration in the appointment of principal officers for the 9th national assembly”.
The group while applauding the efforts of President Buhari in fixing roads and other infrastructure in the South East, called on the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole and other APC key stakeholders to zone the position of Senate President to the South East for the sake of peace and unity.
Agbaeze urged Ndigbo to support the current administration in correcting the anomalies of the previous administrations.
Another professional group, “United Religious Movement” has cautioned the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against heating the polity.
According to spokesperson of the group comprising Christian youths, Apostle Kehinde Collins, Nigeria is a multi-religious country and as such, equal opportunities must be given to the two predominant religions: Islam and Christianity for the sake of peace and unity.
He stressed that the 9th session of the national assembly is made up of Christians and Muslims in the red and green chambers.
Addressing a special session with members of the group on Tuesday, Collins urged the leadership of the APC to take cognizance of the heterogeneous nature of Nigeria.
He said, “it is imperative for the APC to be conscious of the multi-religious nature of the country.
” Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila have been penciled by the APC as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.
“The duo of Lawan and Gbajabiamila are Muslims.
” There is need to accommodate Christians in these positions.
“For the sake of peaceful co-existence among all religious and ethnic groups, there must be fairness and equity in appointments across the board.
” The appointments are lopsided and will polarize the country”.
” The leadership of the APC should consider a Christian for either President of the Senate or Speaker of the House of Representatives.
While urging religious leaders to call the political class to order, Collins appealed to the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole to ensure all ethnic and religious groups are given a equal opportunities.
