Presidency Attack Obasanjo: Your tenure represented dark days of democracy

Yesterday, the Presidency took aim at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his open letter from the New Year in which he publicly supported Mr. Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate for the election on February 25.

In the letter, Obasanjo lashed out at President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and reminded young people in Nigeria that it was their turn to decide their own fate by voting for Mr. Obi.

The Presidency described Chief Obasanjo as a frustrated individual who is morally reprehensible for criticizing the current administration in response to the former President’s assertion that Nigerians were living in hell under Buhari’s administration.

Mallam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, issued the following statement on behalf of the Presidency: “Mr. Obasanjo’s tenure between 1999 and 2007 represented the dark days of Nigeria’s democracy, as we said sometimes back then, due to a slew of constitutional assaults,”

It introduced its response on four grounds, saying “previous President Obasanjo is so notable to all that nobody needs to depict what his identity is.

It went on: “One of the reasons he won’t stop attacking President Muhammadu Buhari is that the former president won’t stop being jealous of anyone who beats him to a new record in the nation’s development process. As a result, he won’t stop attacking President Buhari.”

“President Buhari is ahead of Chief Obasanjo in all areas of national development, which is a cardinal sin for Obasanjo, whose hallucinations tell him that he is the best Nigerian leader ever and there will never be another one better than him. President Buhari is ahead of Chief Obasanjo in all areas of national development.

“After three decades of broken promises, President Buhari just finished the world-class structure that is the Second Niger Bridge. It is now waiting to be put into service.

During his first term as president, Obasanjo laid the foundation for the bridge, but construction never got started.

“He returned to the site to turn the sod for the bridge the second time when he sought re-election for his second term in office.

“Obasanjo told the foremost Southeast traditional ruler that he was a liar, in the full presence of the Chiefs and Oracles in his palace, when the Obi of Onitsha, who was forthright and scholarly, reminded him that he had done this in the past.

To win over the Southeast, Obasanjo lied. Although President Buhari didn’t get their votes, he built the bridge because he thought it was right.”

The Presidency also stated that Obasanjo was dissatisfied with President Buhari’s international acclaim, particularly for his insistence that the nation’s constitution should be respected in terms of government tenure.

“Two, President Buhari had been winning accolades and awards for attempting to do what the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution says a leader should do: serve one term, maximum two, and then leave.

“President Buhari has repeatedly stated that he will oversee an election that is superior to the one that brought him to office and that he will step down when it is appropriate.

“Having attempted residency stretching and fizzled, Obasanjo’s imaginary psyche should be letting him know that he is the one enduring an onslaught.

“However, he is not on President Buhari’s radar because experience has demonstrated that a third term or tenure extension is a recipe for political instability, particularly in West Africa, where there have been at least three successful coups and numerous unsuccessful attempts.

Additionally, the majority of African leaders designated President Buhari as the continent’s anti-corruption champion.

As the Nigerian Senate documented in 2011, “you can’t be an anti-corruption champion if [you] meddled and bent the rules.” Carrying the horrible responsibility of what happened to national assets in the name of privatization.

“As an example, the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria, or ALSCON, was established with $3.2 billion and was sold to a Russian company called Russal for a pitiful sum of $ 130 million. Delta Steel, which was set up in 2005, at an expense of $ 1.5 billion, was offered to Worldwide Framework for just $ 30 million.

“ALSCON was reimbursed $ 120 million for the Imo River dredging that was never carried out.

“Three, which is connected to the one above, is the growing recognition of President Buhari as the champion of democracy on the African continent as a whole and in the West African subregion.

“As president, Obasanjo destabilized internal democracy by orchestrating the impeachment of governors who disobeyed his highly imperial administration one after another.

“To remove governors Joshua Dariye, Rashidi Ladoja, Peter Obi, Chris Ngige, and Ayo Fayose from office, the former president used federal machinery. They were the then legislative heads of Level, Oyo, Anambra, Anambra and Ekiti, individually, unfairly eliminated them, utilizing the police and mystery administration under his influence.

“Under his leadership, a five-member legislature ‘impeached’ Governor Dariye in Plateau at 6:00 a.m.; Governor Ladoja of Oyo was removed from office by 18 members out of 32; Members of the APGA impeached Governor Obi of Anambra at 5:00 a.m. because they did not have the two-thirds majority required by the constitution.

“In an effort to retaliate against Governor Amaechi for changing his political affiliation, the Rivers State legislature transferred its legislative authority to the federal parliament.

“As a result of his petty animosity toward the governor at the time, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he unlawfully withheld from Lagos State revenues that were due from federal sources and condemned the Supreme Court.

“On the other hand, during a meeting with African heads of state and government a few weeks ago in Washington, US President Joe Biden referred to President Buhari as a champion of democracy and a model for the leaders of African states.

“By adopting a vengeful attitude, Obasanjo has clearly become even more jealous,” the author writes.

The Presidency added, “Four, to say that the situation in Nigeria at this time is “frying pan to fire” should be read as referring to a personal experience for him, and we know what that means.”

Obasanjo considers it “hell” when a president—or any president who succeeds him—does not act in Obasanjo’s interests at all times and in all situations. After that, frustrated, he continues to attack.

“Obasanjo’s wrathful demeanor towards President Buhari is the level of self-centeredness and minimal shy of moral filthiness.”
