Nigeria 2023 elections: 88 people died, over 450 rights violation petitions received: NHRC

From the elections on February 25 and March 18, which resulted in the deaths of 88 people, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) claims that it received over 450 cases pertaining to human rights.

At a press conference on Monday, Hilary Ogbonna, the executive secretary’s human rights adviser, made the announcement.

Mobilizing Voters for Election (MOVE) was launched on October 17, 2022, by the NHRC. MOVE is a human rights-based campaign and multifaceted program that aims to promote electorate participation in the 2023 elections and facilitate access.

The broad objective of MOVE is to increase access, participation, credibility, and accountability in Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

The NHRC said it set up a Public Disdain Discourse Register in October 2022, recording 22 disdain discourse cases, with examinations sent off on carried out previously, during and after the races.

88 deaths occurred during the elections, according to the commission.

Insecurity and violence are the nation’s emerging external threats and sources of fear. Politicians and their backers use incitement and hate speech. New dangers are the assault on media associations and terrorizing of the legal executive,” expressed the NHRC.

“Potential impacts are loss of faith and integrity in the judicial process,” the commission added. Ethnic and new violence are the results of incitement.

NHRC chief, Tony Ojukwu, said, “You have been with us through the cycle, and we must brief you on how far we have gone. We thank the media and our accomplices, (the) UN inhabitant facilitator, Passage Establishment and Lawful Guard and Help Task (LEDAP). We must maintain our adherence to the law no matter what. We can only grow as individuals in this way.
