Troops arrest IPOB commander who allegedly killed Gulak

According to PRNigeria, a deputy commander of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been detained by Nigerian troops for the alleged murder of Ahmed Gulak, a political adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Nwagwu Chiwendu, the suspect, was apprehended on Tuesday while his father was being buried at Mbaise in Imo State, in the southeast of Nigeria.

Mr. Chiwendu was to be the IPOB’s primary instructor in weapon handling. Later, he rose to become Temple’s second in command, who is now the group’s state leader.

Mr. Chiwendu, the suspect, was said to have left the Nigerian Army and joined the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the IPOB’s militant wing, on January 21.

“He served on OPHK and accordingly has functional experience. He was detained yesterday while his father was being buried at Mbaise. He is going to take us to their camp at Obowo tonight.

“He confirmed that his camp is responsible for the kidnapping of the two expatriates along Owerri-Okigwe Road and the killing of two police inspectors escorting them,” as well as his confession to the murder of Gulak.

“They are the ones who also set our Hilux on fire last week and killed our soldiers in the same spot. They were both involved in the attack on the Owerri INEC office. A military source, as reported by PRNigeria, stated, “He is currently with the police.”
