UPDATED] Polls: Police arrest Rivers Rep member with $498,100 (See Photos)

Dr. Chinyere Igwe, a member of the House of Representatives, was arrested early on Friday morning with a bundle of dollars along Ana Road, Port Harcourt, a few days after his television and radio stations were allegedly bombed by gunmen.

While confirming Igwe’s arrest, the police provided a list of recipients and the total amount of $498,100 USD.

According to The PUNCH, dynamite attacks on the Atlantic Television Network and Wish FM 99.5, both of which were housed in the same building in Ozuoba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, resulted in the destruction of numerous properties.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the head of the State Police Command, stated that Igwe was apprehended by employees assigned to the Independent National Electoral Commission office on Aba Road in Port Harcourt during a stop and search operation.

Iringe-Koko stated following his arrest that the lawmaker would be swiftly interrogated and arraigned under the direction of AIG Abutu Yaro, the Assistant Inspector General of Police sent to the state for elections.

In the green chamber of the National Assembly, Igwe represents Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2, and he is a fervent supporter of Atiku Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.

A distribution list for the money was also found. The quickest possible interrogation and arraignment in court has been ordered by AIG Abutu Yaro, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Election).

“The Command urges all contestants and political parties to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws,” reads the statement.

Superintendent of Police Iringe-Koko urged state residents and members to use the police’s hotlines to report suspicious movements and other situations that could compromise security.

“Members of the public are encouraged to avail themselves of the available hotlines to report any observation that they believe has the potential to lead to crime or breakdown of law and order,” she stated.
