In Aldai, Nandi County, Kenya, a 300-year-old Ekebergia capensis, also known as the Cape Ash (Teldet in Kalenjin), a tree considered sacred by the Kalenjin community has fallen.
Prior to the establishment of St. Peter’s Koyo ACK Church in Nandi, the multi-trunked tree was used for prayers.
Charles Kering stated, “One of the elders of the community;
“Because our ancestors used to hold spiritual services there, the tree is thought to be as old as 300 years and is thought to be home to spirits. We only heard a loud bang at 6 a.m. after its fall, so we have no idea what happened to it.
Some members of the community believe that the fallen tree is a sign of a new generation of leaders following the death of former President Daniel Arap Moi, while others believe that the tree fell because people didn’t treat the old people with respect.
Strict pioneers anyway accepted that the tree was “simply old” and had outlasted its solidarity.
