Envy stopped Abiola from emerging president, says Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has stated that the Baptist Boys High School in Abeokuta, Ogun State, shaped him into the moral leader he is today.

Obasanjo stated that the school shaped others in addition to him, including the late sage Obafemi Awolowo; MKO Abiola, who won the presidential election on June 12, 1993; and Bola Ajibola, a former judge at the International Court of Justice, among others.

This was said by Obasanjo on Wednesday in Abeokuta during a lecture entitled “Eyin Ni Iwe Wa: You Are Our Epistle” at the school’s centennial celebrations.

The Old Boys Association at BBHS was in charge of organizing the event.

Obasanjo claims that the 100-year-old school has, in addition to education, at various times instilled godly virtue in all of its students.

Obasanjo stated, “I would not be who I am without BBHS.”

He stated that Abiola would have served as another former president for the BBHS, but “bad belle” prevented him from doing so.

The expression “Bad Belle” comes from pidgin and is frequently used in Nigerian English.

In a metaphorical sense, “bad belle” refers to lust or resentment.

On July 7, 1998, Abiola passed away while being held.

“Today, there are distinguished old boys in all walks of life, that is, the private sector, academia, the military and paramilitary, civil society, traditional rulership, etc.,” Obasanjo stated. Prof. Kayode Oyesiku, the current president of the Old Boys Association at BBHS, exemplifies this.

“We would have needed one more old student of BBHS to be President for us to permanently locate it in BBHS after three times if it weren’t for Nigerian bad belle. With me as President, we would have needed one more old student of BBHS to be President. That presents a challenge for the younger boys of the future.

“The godly virtue instilled in them by the school is what all these great BBHS graduates share. That added education.

“We carry it everywhere we go as an epistle written by BBHS to our families, communities, states, country, Africa’s continent, and the entire world.

“In conclusion, the gate and road into the school were beautifully constructed by the class of 1979–84. They also gave me the pleasure of contributing financially to that admirable endeavor. I thanked them for their offer to name the road after me, but I begged for their leniency, and they agreed to name the road after E. L. Akisanya. The road is now called E. L. Akisanya Road, and the gate is called E. L. Akisanya Gate.
