FG cautions Obi against inciting violence

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, has been warned by the Federal Government not to incite violence in response to the election result.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, issued the warning in Washington, DC, as part of his official engagements with various international media organizations regarding the recently concluded 2023 polls.

The minister has contacted the Foreign Policy Magazine, Voice of America, Associated Press, and Washington Post thus far.

Mohammed stated that Obi should not, on the one hand, seek redress in court over the results of the polls and, on the other, incite people to violence, during his interactions with media organizations.

“Obi and his vice, Datti Ahmed, cannot be threatening Nigerians that the end of democracy in Nigeria will occur if the President-elect of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, is sworn in on May 29. This is treason. They are doing this because you cannot invite insurrection.

“Obi is not the democrat he claimed to be, and his statement is that of a desperate person.

He stated, “A democrat should not only believe in democracy when he wins the election.”

The minister stated that there was no path to victory for either Obi or Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, in challenging the election results.

“The constitution has rigid models for anyone who needs to be leader of the country.

He must not only have received the majority of votes in an election, but he must also have received one quarter of the votes in at least 25 states.

He stated, “Only the president-elect met the criteria with 8.79 million votes and one quarter of all votes cast in 29 states of the federation.”

According to the minister, Atiku, who finished in second place with 6.9 million votes, received only one-quarter of the votes cast in 21 states.

According to him, Obi finished third with 5.8 million votes, but he only received one quarter of the votes cast in 15 states.

The minister stated, “You cannot win an election in a poll in which you came to a distant third place and failed to meet constitutional requirements.”
