Italian Clubs Lost All 3 European Finals They Featured In 2023

The European nation reached the most important continental finals at club level plus the youth international showpiece, but failed to win anything

Although Italian soccer reasserted its authority at the top table by securing a spot in the finals of the most prestigious club competitions in Europe (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League), the clubs suffered defeat in all of them. The nation then saw its young stars fail at the final hurdle of the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina.

* Europa League: Sevilla 1-1 Roma (Sevilla win on penalties)

In the Europa League final, Roma, led by Mourinho, fell short as they lost in a penalty shootout. Controversy surrounded the match as many believed that Roma should have been awarded a penalty for a defensive handball during extra time. Despite their efforts, Sevilla emerged victorious, adding a record seventh trophy to their collection.

* Conference League: Fiorentina 1-2 West Ham

Next up was the Conference League final, as Fiorentina faced West Ham. Although Fiorentina initially fell behind, they managed to level almost immediately. However, with just seconds left on the clock, Jarrod Bowen secured the victory for West Ham, denying Fiorentina the title.

* Champions League: Manchester City 1-0 Inter

The Champions League final proved to be the toughest challenge for Italian teams. Inter faced Manchester City, who had recently won the Premier League and the FA Cup. It was a daunting task to expect Inter to overcome such formidable opponents, but on the night in Istanbul there was little to choose between the two teams. Ultimately, Pep Guardiola’s men secured a narrow victory, dashing the hopes of Italian football to claim a European trophy this season. There were tears all round.
