Nigerian security agents raid Synagogue in Imo, arrest Jewish worshipers

Nigerian force arrested dozens of Jewish worshipers at Ekwerazu in Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State on Saturday February 12, 2022.

The worshippers were on Shabbat when state forces invaded the synagogue and took them away.

Residents could not confirm the number of people arrested, but an eyewitness told OAK METRO that the number of people he saw in military vehicles after the invasion was more than 10.

“They invaded the synagogue during worship and forced the Jewish worshipers into military vehicles after threatening to shoot them,” the eyewitness said.

It is unclear where those arrested were taken to, as state forces opened fire at a crossroads in the area.

The incident is one of the latest crackdowns on Jewish adherents in eastern Nigeria, where government forces razed scores of synagogues and arrested dozens, accusing them of having links to a separatist group- the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) whose detained leader Nnamdi Kanu is a Jewish worshiper.
