Photos Show Russia’s Construction of Turkey’s Inaugural Nuclear Power Plant

According to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russia’s state-owned Rosatom is constructing Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, with the first unit set to be completed by May 2023. A team of 3,000 Russian engineers is working on the project, and the fourth tier of the internal steel containment building shell has been recently installed.

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, costing $20 billion, will be the first commercial nuclear power station in Turkey and will have four Generation III+ VVER-1200 units, with the first expected to be operational in 2023, followed by a new unit every year afterwards.
