Nigerians have been reassured by the Presidency that the events of June 12, 1993 will not occur again.
Garba Shehu, the spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari, stated that the presidential election that was allegedly marred by irregularities would not be canceled.
Shehu urged political parties and candidates who were dissatisfied with the election results to go to court.
“At the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, LDCs, disclosed President Buhari drummed up support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Presidency,” was the title of his statement.
In part, the statement reads: He was confronted prior to the trip with coordinated efforts to poison public opinion against national institutions, particularly the presidential election and the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, as an institution, which was the target of vile and unsubstantiated accusations.
“The wishful thinkers appeared to assume that the election crisis of June 12, 1993, the worst since the Civil War, could be recreated.”
The outcome of the election on February 25 had been criticized by some candidates for president.
The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi are dissatisfied with the outcome of the presidential election.
Both Atiku and Obi claimed to have won the presidential election despite the fact that the process was marred by irregularities.
The outcomes of the election are being challenged by both candidates in court.
