Amnesty International Nigeria has accused the banned separatist group IPOB of using scare tactics to disenfranchise Igbos and other Nigerians in the South-East during the February 25 and March 11 elections. Amnesty International Nigeria has also called on security agencies to respect the rights of citizens and be professional in carrying out their duties.
This was stated by Auwal Rafsanjani, chairman of the organization’s board of trustees, in Abuja during a celebration of World Social Justice Day and a farewell ceremony for Osai Ojigho, AIN’s country director.
He stated, “I am calling on the security to ensure that they maintain professionalism, neutralism, courtesy, be impartial, and ensure that they do not allow themselves to be bought by politicians.”
He claims that numerous local and international organizations will keep an eye on the actions of election security personnel. Mr. Rafsanjani voiced concern regarding the activities of non-state actors that posed a threat to the election process.
It also stated that “the way politicians are preaching violence is equally of great concern that peace-loving Nigerians, especially persons with disabilities may not be able to go and vote” in other regions of the country.
To ensure credible elections, Mr. Rafsanjani stated that these difficulties needed to be addressed immediately.
He asserts that injustice continues to be the primary factor in the majority of issues in Nigeria.
“The fundamental problem that is affecting everything in the nation is injustice. Therefore, it will be difficult for Nigerians to realize their potential to compete favorably and participate in the governance process until we are able to address issues of social justice in this country,” Mr. Rafsanjani added.
