Catastrophic Flooding In Libya: 2,000 People Feared Dead

Severe flooding, triggered by Storm Daniel, has reportedly resulted in more than 2,000 feared deaths in Libya, particularly in the eastern part of the country, according to statements made by Osama Hamad, the head of Libya’s eastern parliament-backed government. These statements were reported by the Libyan News Agency. However, CNN has not been able to independently confirm this death toll, as Hamad did not provide a source for the numbers. Footage shared on social media depicts submerged vehicles, collapsed buildings, and torrents of water flooding streets. The Red Crescent in Benghazi estimated that 150 to 250 people may have died in the city of Derna, where phone lines were down and streets were severely flooded. Hospitals in the eastern city of Bayda had to be evacuated due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. This flooding resulted from the remnants of Storm Daniel, which had initially caused catastrophic flooding in Greece before developing into a medicane (Mediterranean hurricane). The storm’s remnants continue to impact northern Libya and are expected to move eastward towards northern Egypt, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya is closely monitoring the situation caused by severe weather conditions in the eastern part of the country.
