Enyimba Explains Why Innocent Gabriel Okey’s Jersey Number Was Hand Written

Enyimba Football Club of Aba lost 0-1 to Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo in the brand new African Football League on Sunday, but the attention of Nigerian football fans was focused on the jersey of Innocent Gabriel Okey. It looked like his jersey number was handwritten with chalk.

Very many Nigerians slammed Enyimba on Nairaland, Twitter and Facebook and the club has now provided an explanation for the strange jersey.

According to Enyimba, there was a mix up when Innocent Gabriel was being registered and he was registered with the number 3, instead of 5. He had a perfectly normal printed number 5 jersey, but he couldn’t wear it because he was registered as number 3, so they had to quickly create a number 3 jersey for him.

During the registration with CAF, he was registered as number 3 jersey instead of number 5.

They found out when the match was about to start, and there was no way CAF would allow him to play with the number he wasn’t registered with.
