The sub-prefect of Ekondo-Titi sub-division —Timothee Aboloa— and his driver, the mayor of Ekondo-Titi municipality, Keneth Nanje, the President of the ruling party (CPDM) section, Ebeku William, and army adjutant, Akono were killed by a landmine on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.
The group was travelling when they hit a landmine in Bekora, Ndian division of the Southwest region of Cameroon. All indications point to the suspicion that the improvised explosive device was planted by English-speaking separatists.
“The convoy of the mayor and sub-prefect was on a socio-economic tour when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Bekora, a locality situated in the Ekondo-Titi sub division,” revealed the Senior Divisional Officer for Ndian division, under which jurisdiction Ekondo-Titi is placed, Gilbert Guibai Baldena confirmed.
Reacting to the news, Human Rights Watch, a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) said, “Faced with such human losses, it is essential that the government guarantees an efficacious investigation so that not only the victims can obtain justice but also to discourage future attacks and reinforce the protection of the rights to life and education.”
Though Anglophone separatists are suspected of having placed the landmine that killed the government functionaries, no faction of the feuding separatist groups has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident.
