Presidential Panel Plans 83% Cut In Taxes, Levies

Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, revealed that Nigeria currently has more than 60 different forms of taxes and levies, many of which disproportionately burden the impoverished segments of society. During an appearance on the Channels Television program ‘Sunrise Daily,’ he emphasized that his committee is actively working to reduce the number of taxes and levies to fewer than 10, representing an 83.33% decrease.

Oyedele explained that the goal is to simplify the tax system to enhance compliance, reduce the overall tax burden on citizens, and improve revenue collection for the government. He cited examples of excessive taxation faced by businesses, including the requirement for multiple tickets to sell basic items like pure water, which he argued was unjust and not constitutionally mandated.

Additionally, Oyedele highlighted that the majority of these taxes originate from local governments, but the funds collected are often not remitted to the government’s coffers. He criticized the practice of local governments imposing levies such as wheelbarrow tax and pure water tax on vulnerable individuals who are struggling to make a living.

He also acknowledged the issue of trust among Nigerians regarding the government, which contributes to tax evasion. Oyedele urged Nigerians to focus on holding the government accountable and promoting transparency in tax collection and utilization.
