The Abuja Federal High Court orders the IGP to release an IPOB supporter who has been held illegally and awards him N50 million in compensation.

On December 13, 2022, the Federal High Court of the Honourable Justice Zainab Bage Abubakar, which is located in Abuja, issued an order directing the Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately grant Mazi Solomon Onyegbule unconditional release from police custody.

As expressed in the Judgment papers, Equity Abubakar says the Court made the request on the premise that the candidate, Mazi Solomon Onyegbule has laid out his case in regards to the prior supplications he(Mazi Solomon Onyegbula) made to the Fair Court.

Keep in mind that on March 8, 2021, the notorious Abba Kyari-led Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) illegally kidnapped Mazi Solomon Onyegbule. After abducting Mazi Solomon, the infamous F-SARS team led by Abba Kyari did not take him to court for a trial; instead, they locked him up in agony at the detention facility run by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abattoir, Abuja—also known as A Nigeria Government’s Slaughter House. Since Mazi Solomon was kidnapped, no one has been able to verify his condition.

It should be noted that Mazi Solomon Onyegbule has not been convicted of any crime known to humanity, as evidenced by information that has been independently verified. He was taken away primarily for supporting the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Consequently, on February 7, 2022, the IPOB legal team initiated a motion on Mazi Solomon’s behalf, and the motion was equally filed on the same date. Mazi Solomon Onyegbula asked the court to grant him the rightful relief of declaring that the IGP’s police’s arrest and detention of him (without a trial) from March 8, 2021, until the application date is unlawful, oppressive, and unconstitutional. Since Mazi Solomon is innocent, he also asked the court to order his unconditional release and compensation.

As a result, the court ordered the Police (respondent) to clearly respond to Mazi Solomon Onyegbule’s claims, but the Police were unable to do so until December 13, 2022.

Because of this, the Honourable Court decided that the applicant, Solomon Onyegbule, had proved that his fundamental rights had been violated, as he claimed. The court also says that the respondent (IGP) hasn’t filed a counter affidavit to dispute the facts in Mazi Solomon’s affidavit, hasn’t done so, or hasn’t even bothered to do so. The Police also, has neglected to give any avocation of the break of Mazi Solomon’s key privileges.

As a result, the Court ordered the IGP to release Mazi Solomon Onyegbule without condition and pay him fifty million naira (N50 million). In addition, the court ordered the police to publicly apologize to Mazi Solomon for his unlawful arrest, illegal detention, torture injuries, and other inhuman and degrading treatment.
