Tinubu urges gov-elects to embrace opponents

On Tuesday, Bola Tinubu, the President-elect, urged the newly elected governors and lawmakers to embrace both their opponents and supporters in order to create a united Nigeria.

Tinubu said it was important for the winners and losers of Saturday’s governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections to begin the healing process. He was congratulating the winners.

The election, according to the former governor of Lagos State, is crucial to the development and maintenance of democracy and democratic governance at the state level.

Tinubu argued in a statement on Tuesday that consolidating democratic governance at the subnational level will increase development and improve people’s quality of life.

The President-elect urged the newly elected officials to begin the healing process and embrace their challengers in the polls in order to ensure that the masses would benefit from democracy and good governance.

The elections, in fact, are over. The people have chosen the governors and legislators for their states, who will represent them for the next four years. Now is the time for governance and leadership.

The majority would have the upper hand in a democracy, but that majority should not prevent the minority from speaking up. We, as democrats, must safeguard free speech. Those who did not win should have a big heart for tolerance and respect for the greater good of the nation, while those who did win should be gracious.

“We should find critical ways to join individuals; those who backed us in the election and those who did not. By embracing both the adversaries and those who support them, we must promote the healing process. As I previously stated, politics are no longer necessary. This is the time to build a nation, which requires more than one person or a group of people. We really want each hand from any place it might come to be at hand.

“As your President, I am prepared to collaborate with you all. As we all unite in unity of purpose and renewed hope for the improvement of our blessed nation and beloved people, I will be a worthy partner on whom you can rely and trust.

The assaults, which he described as verbal and physical, that took place during the elections were also condemned by the former governor of Lagos. He said that the incidents were unacceptable and incompatible with democratic ideals.

He stated, “Elections should not be moments of grief; rather, they should be a celebration of our maturing democracy and freedom of choice.” Particularly disheartening to me are reports of instances of ethnic slurs that can lead to unnecessary mischaracterizations.

“My plea is for us to rise above our differences, which, in point of fact, are less significant than the cherished threads that bind us together as a people regardless of the circumstances under which we were born.

I can attest to the strength of our diversity and unity as a former governor of Lagos State. I intend to bring the inclusiveness we created in Lagos into national governance as your incoming president so that we can all realize our full potential together.
